Twenty-year-old Kitka is the daughter of Edgar, a struggling stonemason that makes gravestones. Rudy, his young helper, is secretly in love with Kitka. Desiring independence from her father, Kitka works at an underground knitting shop next to a fortune-teller, Aurelia. Her quest eventually leads her into the hands of her father’s greatest competitor who uses his son Konrad to woo Kitka. As she searches for her own identity, worlds collide in more than one way. Aurelia falls in love with Edgar and Kitka realizes that Konrad was using her.
